Secrets of Babysitter's Popularity among Foreign Families

Zhou Yuqun, 46, a migrant worker from Zigong, Sichuan, and a babysitter at Shuixiang Linli Community in Suzhou Industrial Park. What makes her special is that she has been working in foreign families for eight years, though she speaks no foreign languages. So what're her secrets?

Secret One: Being Meticulous and Hardworking
Zhou keeps a notebook recording the details of a baby's day. "I'll put down when the baby eats, how much, what kind of fruit I give him, when the baby sleeps and for how long. I also take notes when I change for them, so the parents will know what we do during the day."

Being away and still knowing the day of their baby, this is important for parents, and it helps Zhou get her second job: the father recommended her to one of his foreign colleagues.

Secret Two: Being Open and Communicative
"I know little foreign languages but most of my employers know Chinese." So when they have to talk, Zhou would get a piece of paper and put down what she wants to say. If this doesn't work, she will ask a teacher friend for help.

Zhou told the reporter that she was taking English class during weekend. Meanwhile, the parents she is working for are also learning Chinese. But language is not the only thing they learn from each other.

She is babysitting Jason of an English family and the mother used to know little about Chinese food. With a Chinese babysitter, Jason's mom gradually falls for Sichuan food, asking her to cook typical Sichuan dish such as Kung Pao Chicken for the family and even learning from her.

"I also learned a lot from foreign families," Zhou said. When it comes to raising a child, "they are so different from us." Jason has his own bed and sleeps alone at his own bedroom. "Foreign kids are more independent and Chinese parents tend to spoil babies. I'll be a granny in a couple of months and I definitely learn a thing or two from them."

Secret Three: Being Positive and Sincere
Zhou said she enjoyed the job very much and didn't have special requirement on salary. "Some babysitters earn more than me but I'm satisfied with mine. I love babies and they love me, that's quite enough for me."

During past eight years, Zhou has worked for seven foreign families from GB, Germany, Australia, and Spain and all the parents trusted her with their babies and homes. "To tell the truth, it's not so hard to work at a foreign family. The top secret is being sincere and you'll get the same in return." she smiled.
